When mycelium meets marketing

Client today saw our 610 mm mycelium acoustic tiles (12 in the mockup room) and asked if they’ll grow back if scratched — and whether we can “brand the spores.” Meanwhile I’m explaining that the passive stack vent sketched in blue on A7.3 isn’t a smoke chimney for the composting toilet; it’s how we cool the lobby without a chiller.

I bring a 100 mm offcut from the same 610 mm mycelium tiles and do a quick “scratch test” in front of them to show the sealed surface is inert and won’t “grow back,” which usually kills the “brand the spores” bit. If they still want a logo moment, I steer them to a laser-etched edge on the aluminum trim instead.

I keep a laser‑etched offcut of the same 610 mm tile to show that any “brand the spores” treatment lives in the clear sealer, not the mycelium, and I wipe it with a damp cloth so they see it won’t bloom or smudge. If they insist on color, UV‑print on a separate fascia works, but watch for solvent inks yellowing the bio‑sealer over time.

I use a 30‑second phone clip of the grow‑to‑kiln process and a $3 incense stick; in the mockup room I crack a window and the smoke visibly drafts up the stack from A7.3, and the “smoke chimney” jokes stop. If facilities nixes incense, a tiny USB fogger works the same.

Quick trick that saves me: I park a $10 hygrometer in the mockup and when someone asks “will it grow back?” I point at 30–40% RH and let them handle the bone‑dry tile, which usually ends the biology talk. If they still want “branding,” I stick a removable vinyl logo on the topcoat so we’re not touching the substrate.

I bring a pin‑type moisture meter and let them jab the demo tile; seeing 6–8% ends the “brand the spores” idea, and a quick isopropyl swab shows scuffs live in the topcoat, not the substrate. Minor caveat: the pins leave tiny dimples, so I only test a sacrificial edge — this $30 MM1E is plenty: Error Page.
