For sealants that’s ASTM C920, Class 25 movement; adhesion to anodized aluminum without primer; and VOC ≤ 50 g/L. I also ask for a 2x2 mockup joint before we approve. The habit that helps is a 15-minute reference audit using a Google Sheets template with locked cells, so I can’t forget the test methods or submittal items. One watch-out: lead times and compatibility. A cheaper equal has burned us with 8–10 week delivery and no primer for Kynar-coated metal.
I added a simple Div 01 substitution form that forces a side-by-side matrix, third-party test data, and a stated cost/schedule delta; anything after 75% CDs gets a review fee. Since then, the only sealant swaps we see are ones that meet C920 Class 25 and stick to anodized aluminum.
What finally killed most of my late sealant subs: I require a project-specific compatibility/adhesion letter from the manufacturer for our exact substrates (anodized aluminum, Kynar, concrete) with passing ASTM C920/C794 data submitted within 10 days - no letter, no review. We also make them run a quick ASTM C1521 field adhesion test on the mockup before approval, which filters out the shaky ones fast.

@OP I bake a hard cutoff into 01 25 00: subs due 10 days before the “week bids go out,” or they’re treated as post-bid changes — this drives me nuts otherwise. For 07 92 00 I add one extra filter: a manufacturer compatibility letter with adjacent substrates (air barrier, coatings, stone) and proof of no-stain per ASTM C1248, which weeds out most “or equal” pitches. Small caveat: on tiny TI jobs I’ll shrink the window to 5 days if there’s a real cost delta.
Piggybacking on @aramirez’s 01 25 00 cutoff, I also require a signed ‘system compatibility letter’ — sealant manufacturer plus adjacent systems — and equal or better warranty terms than the Basis-of-Design… If they can’t show that (and a recent project in similar exposure), it’s a quick no and saves me from sealant roulette.
